What Early Precision Engineering Enquiries Are Teaching Me About Better RFQ Matching

Different shops, different machines, different strengths. That is why matching matters.

Birmingham CNC Machining is beginning to receive its first genuine project enquiries.

Although it is still early, they are already showing me how varied precision engineering requirements can be and why matching an RFQ involves more than finding a company with the right machinery.

One enquiry arrived with a relatively clear brief and enough manufacturing information for suitable companies to assess it.

Another was at an earlier stage, with important questions still open around materials, manufacturing process and the most practical route to production. In this case, the customer was not only looking for someone to make the part. They also needed practical input from a manufacturer who could help determine the best way to produce it.

These projects have not reached final outcomes, so they are not case studies. But working on the enquiries has already shown me more clearly why manufacturing requirements need to be matched thoughtfully.


The right machinery is only part of the match

When looking for a suitable precision engineering company, it is tempting to focus entirely on equipment and stated capabilities.

Can the company machine the required material? Does it offer milling, turning, EDM or five-axis machining? Can its equipment accommodate the size of the part?

These questions matter, but they do not tell the whole story.

A company may be technically capable of producing a component without the project being commercially or operationally attractive to it. The quantity may be too small, the job may sit outside its preferred industries, or the amount of development work may not fit the way its production is organised.

Conversely, a development project that looks difficult to place may be exactly the kind of challenge another engineering company enjoys.

The real question is therefore not simply, “Who can make this?” It is, “For whom is this the right kind of work?”


Customers do not always arrive with a complete manufacturing specification

Early enquiries have also highlighted the difference between a project that is ready to quote and one that still needs manufacturing input.

Some customers arrive with a detailed drawing, specified material, tolerances and quantity. Others have a strong design concept but need an experienced manufacturer to advise on materials, processes, finishes or practical design changes.

That does not necessarily make the second enquiry less valuable. It simply requires a different type of supplier.

Some precision engineering companies are best suited to clearly defined, repeatable production work. Others have the flexibility and problem-solving experience needed for prototypes, development projects and unusual one-off pieces.

Understanding which situation applies before making an introduction can save time for both sides.


More quotations are not always better

There is an understandable temptation to distribute an enquiry as widely as possible. In theory, more suppliers should mean a better chance of receiving a competitive quotation.

In practice, sending every project to every available manufacturer risks creating noise.

Engineering companies already spend time reviewing enquiries that may never become orders. If the quantity, application, process or commercial expectations are clearly outside what a company wants, sending it the RFQ benefits nobody.

A smaller number of relevant introductions is more useful than a long list of companies selected only because they offer CNC machining.

That means learning more about both sides: what the customer is trying to achieve, and what each manufacturer genuinely wants to quote for.


The technical conversation should happen directly

There is also a limit to how much value an intermediary can add before the customer and manufacturer need to speak to one another.

My role is not to make technical decisions on behalf of either party. It is to gather enough information to identify a potentially suitable fit, make a considered introduction and allow the detailed conversation to happen between the people designing and manufacturing the part.

This becomes particularly important when a project is still being developed. Questions around material choice, manufacturability, finish and cost are best discussed directly with the engineering company assessing the work.

The aim is not to stand between the customer and the manufacturer. It is to help the right conversation begin.


Relevance matters more than volume

These early enquiries have reinforced something I suspected when I began building Birmingham CNC Machining: the challenge is not simply finding companies with the right machines.

It is understanding each project well enough to identify manufacturers for whom the work is genuinely relevant.

That requires more than searching a directory and forwarding an email. It requires learning what different engineering businesses are set up to do, what kinds of projects they value and where their interests differ, even when their capability lists appear similar.

Birmingham CNC Machining is still at an early stage, and I am learning from every enquiry and every conversation with manufacturers across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands.

But the enquiries coming through have made the direction clearer: better matching will come from understanding fit, not simply increasing the number of leads or quotations.

That is the system I am working to build.
